Reentry That Works!

Reentry from prison into society has confounded the Criminal Justice System for decades. Only within the last 5 years have federal and state prisons - and even local county jails - started to recognize the negative impacts incarceration and recidivism have on communities and families and take some small steps to keep people from going back to jail after being released.

SWOP Behind Bars has been working to weave harm reduction elements into the fabric of this process to assist our incarcerated members as they come up for release with a 10 step program to navigate reintegration into society, their communities and their families through the provision of education, information, gap services and case management.

Step 1

Get on the List!

Every New Incarcerated Member gets a welcome letter and an opportunity to give us more details about themselves and what they need while incarcerated and to begin their reentry process! Incarcerated folks can easily sign up for membership through their Edovo dashboard prison tablet.

Complete "Inside" Program Elements

Identification Documents

Did you know that 1 in 3 prisoners is released from prison without Identification? Not being able to prove your identity is a huge barrier for accessing public benefits as well as housing, food, banking and many other things that can keep a survivor down!  SWOP Behind Bars helps our incarcerated clients leave prison with a birth certificate, a state ID and their social security card.

08

Job and Career Development Skills

SWOP Behind Bars clients who contact the hotline within 7 days of release will have immediate access to a digital and physical resume, an email address, a smartphone, a bank account, arrangements for a bus pass and a plan for getting a job and an education if they so desire.

05

Financial Literacy Modules

Our Money Talks Financial Literacy Program for Adults is available on Edovo Prison Tablets, in print and through correspondence with SWOP Behind Bars case managers. Understanding banking, credit and budgeting is a critical skill for developing a healthy relationship with money, reduces exploitation and violence and leads to greater success in ensuring our clients stay our of the Criminal Justice System.

07

Healthcare and Medication

Did you know that prisoners are often released with less than 30 days of medication and have no way of getting insurance or professional healthcare. Many reentering survivors have an increased need for physical and mental healthcare and assistance with accessing critical medications! SWOP Behind Bars works to ensure that our clients are able to quickly seek the services of a physician to prescribe the medication they need!
