STOPNCII Tool Process

STOPNCII.org is a free tool that helps prevent non-consensual intimate images or videos from being shared on participating platforms. It does this by creating a digital fingerprint, called a hash, of the image or video. The image itself does not leave your device.

Step 1: Make sure STOPNCII is the right tool

STOPNCII can be used if:

You are in the intimate image or video.

You have access to the image or video.

The content is nude, sexual, or intimate in nature.

You were over 18 when the image or video was taken.

If the person in the image was under 18 at the time, STOPNCII is not the right tool. Use Take It Down through the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children instead.

Step 2: Save evidence before taking action

Before starting the process, document what happened if the content has already been shared.

Save the URL.

Take screenshots.

Write down the site name, username, date, and any identifying details.

Save messages, threats, payment demands, or harassment connected to the content.

This matters because once content is removed, it may be harder to prove where it appeared.

Step 3: Go to STOPNCII.org and create a case

Visit STOPNCII.org and choose the option to create a case. You do not need to create a public account, and you do not need to provide your name, phone number, or any other personal details.

You will be given a case number and PIN. Save them somewhere safe. If you lose them, STOPNCII cannot recover them.

Step 4: Select the images or videos

Choose the intimate images or videos you want protected. The tool will create a hash from each file on your device.

The original images or videos are not uploaded to STOPNCII. They stay on your device. STOPNCII stores only the digital fingerprint.

If you only have screenshots, you can use them. Try to crop out excess borders or unrelated material without altering the image itself.

For videos, it can help to submit the video and take screenshots from it, because video files and thumbnails may be matched differently.

Step 5: Submit the hashes

Once the hashes are created, STOPNCII shares them with participating platforms. Those platforms can compare future uploads against the hashes.

If someone tries to upload content that matches, the platform may review it and remove or block it in accordance with its policies.

Step 6: Check your case status

Use your case number and PIN to check your case status on STOPNCII. Updates may take a few days to appear.

Keep your case information private and secure.

Step 7: Report already-posted content directly to platforms

STOPNCII is especially useful for preventing content from being reshared on participating platforms, but it does not automatically remove content from every website.

If your image or video is already online, report it directly to the site or platform where it appears. You may need to use that platform’s non-consensual intimate image reporting form, abuse form, copyright/DMCA process, or legal contact.

Step 8: Understand the limits

STOPNCII does not cover the entire internet.

It only works with participating platforms.

It does not work inside encrypted private messages.

It may not catch edited, cropped, filtered, clipped, or altered versions of the image or video.

If a new version appears, you may need to create a new hash for it.

Step 9: Add new cases when needed

If you find additional images, edited versions, screenshots, or clips, you may need to create a new STOPNCII case for those files.

Keep a private record of what you submitted and when.

Step 10: Get support

Non-consensual intimate image abuse can be frightening and isolating. You do not have to handle it alone.

Reach out to trusted friends, community members, legal support, or survivor-centered organizations. If you are a sex worker, consider speaking with an advocate before contacting law enforcement, especially if criminalization, immigration status, custody issues, or housing could create additional risk.

STOPNCII is one tool. It can help reduce the spread of intimate images, but it works best alongside documentation, platform reporting, legal support, digital safety planning, and community care.
